About Amy Shortt

For more than twenty-five years, Amy Shortt has developed people through music, education, and organizational leadership. As a musician, teacher, conductor, and leadership practitioner, she has served in schools, universities, churches, and nonprofit organizations — leading teams, building communities, and guiding people through change in complex, people-centered environments.

Amy holds a master's degree from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, with an emphasis in conducting and piano. Conducting ensembles and cultivating musical communities across both sacred and secular settings became a laboratory for observing how people grow — not only in skill, but in confidence, resilience, character, relationships, and purpose. Over time, she recognized that the principles shaping thriving musical communities also shape effective leadership and began developing The Formed Leader to translate that insight into a practical, teachable methodology for leadership development.

The methodology is deeply influenced by the work of the late Helen Kemp, whose philosophy of music education — it takes the whole person to sing and rejoice — has shaped generations of musicians and educators. The Formed Leader extends that insight into a broader context, proposing that the same integration that forms musicians can form wise, resilient, and courageous leaders.

While music remains the foundation of Amy's own facilitation, The Formed Leader's growing library now draws formation experiences from story, beauty, nature, contemplation, relationship, service, and embodied practice — each selected for its capacity to engage the whole person, not for its medium alone. Amy has facilitated meditation groups for more than twelve years, most recently a mindfulness-and-music group, giving her direct, practiced experience in the contemplative modalities the library now includes.

At her core, Amy is a builder, an integrator, and — above all — a meaning maker: someone who takes what looks unrelated and helps others see how it was whole all along.
